Cambridge and Beyond
Cambridge is the ultimate college town, with bookstores, coffeehouses, movie theaters, and music and clothing stores. During the summer, Harvard Square is alive with street performers and outdoor cafes.
Downtown Boston, just four subway stops away, offers gourmet restaurants, museums, shopping, the Freedom Trail, and theaters.
Summer School students can visit New England’s historic towns, beautiful mountains, clear lakes, rocky coastline, and sandy ocean beaches; they can sunbathe on the grassy banks of the Charles River; and they can enjoy the green lawns and towering trees of Harvard Yard, which provides ideal spots for study, reflection, and diversion from the bustle of Harvard Square.
Transportation
Harvard University is located six miles (9.5 km) from Logan International Airport and five miles (8 km) from downtown Boston. Transportation to and from the airport is available by taxi or by subway. Public transportation in the Boston area is convenient and affordable (see the MBTA website).
Harvard’s libraries, museums, and athletic facilities are within easy walking distance of dormitories and classrooms. A shuttle bus service provides free transportation to key locations around campus during Opening Weekend.
Parking is scarce and expensive; students are urged not to have a car in Cambridge.
Climate
In Cambridge, summers usually are beautiful, warm, and sunny, with occasional hot spells, cool nights, or rain.
