Math Program
The range of course offerings in mathematics will appeal to students of all interests and abilities. Award-winning faculty teach small groups of students, often 15 or fewer. The mathematics placement test, available online, assists students in selecting math courses that are right for them. At the Math Question Center, students gather in the evenings to study together and to work with teaching fellows and professors. They look forward to attending special lectures, math tables, math-in-the-movies nights, and other events.
Beginning with MATH S-Ar, a course in precalculus, the math courses include traditional offerings such as single-variable and multivariable calculus, as well as more specialized classes. Students looking for courses not available at their high schools may choose one of the fast-paced courses in first- or second-semester calculus (MATH S-1a or MATH S-1b) or a more advanced course, such as Multivariable Calculus (MATH S-21a) or Linear Algebra (MATH S-21b). The intensive 8-credit course, MATH S-1ab, covers two semesters of single-variable calculus through sequences and series, and has long been a favorite of talented high school juniors and seniors. Beyond these options, exciting opportunities abound with related courses such as Introduction to Logic (PHIL S-140) and Great Ideas in Computer Science (CSCI S-1).
Summer is the perfect time to come to Harvard and join the community of students and scholars who enjoy the intellectual challenges of the study of mathematics.
