Designed to give beginning students a practical command of the language, this course presents the fundamentals of Spanish grammar through an active oral approach. The reading of literary selections and creative writing complements the acquisition of oral and aural skills. The course includes interactive exercises and cultural activities (music, films, videos). Students also are required to attend the language laboratory.

Conducted in Spanish, this course is for students who wish to develop or improve their mastery of the language. We review grammar, hold class discussions of current events and issues, and read and discuss selections from major Spanish and Latin American writers. Emphasis is placed on oral communication. After SPAN S-Cab, students should be able to understand lectures in Spanish, converse on everyday topics with a native speaker, read material of average difficulty and mature content, and write with acceptable style and correctness. Prerequisite: Two years of secondary school Spanish, one year of college-level Spanish, or permission of the instructor.

In order to develop oral fluency in Spanish this course provides students with opportunities to act out typical situations they would encounter in a Spanish-speaking environment. It also introduces attitudes, values, and cultural patterns of contemporary life in Spain and Latin America through discussions of such things as news reports and art. The course is conducted entirely in Spanish. The course is best suited to students who already have a good grounding in the grammar of the language. Oral proficiency is not a prerequisite. Prerequisites: Three years of secondary school Spanish or three semesters of college-level Spanish.
