This course traces the development of Christian thought and practice in the West from its origins to the present. The course opens with the Hellenistic invasion of Palestine and the formation of the early Church and its canonical scripture. It examines the major changes in Christianity, from the production of its canonical texts, to its flourishing under the Roman Empire and the spread of Christianity to Western Europe, and beyond, into the twenty-first century. Readings typically include the Gospel of Matthew, decisions of Councils, Augustine, Thomas Aquinas, Erasmus, Luther, Calvin, Paley, Victorian authors, Barth, as well as background readings and a text.

This course is an introduction to and exploration of Indo-Tibetan Buddhism in the context of Tibetan intellectual and political history, cultural manifestations, doctrines, and thought. Students read secondary works and examine various primary materials in translation. The course assumes no background in the study of Buddhism, Asian history, religion, or languages.
