The evolution and history of modern jazz (1945–1990) and its social/political implications are discussed and evaluated. Students listen to the music of the classic innovators and stylists from bebop to jazz-rock-fusion: Charlie Parker, Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane, Charles Mingus, and Miles Davis. Prerequisite: A varied listening background, especially to instrumental music. Students are not required to have experience reading notated music or playing an instrument.

Beginning with an introduction to tonal counterpoint, this course concentrates on the analysis and writing of classical two- and three-part forms in the Classical and Romantic styles. Attention is also given to chromatic and advanced harmony in the analysis of nineteenth-century small forms by Brahms, Chopin, and Mendelssohn. Prerequisites: Students should have proficiency in diatonic tonal harmony, chorale harmonization and voice-leading technique, and basic tonal (Roman-numeral) analysis.
