The course examines the influence of science on modern culture and society as viewed through the ideas of Darwin, Freud, and Einstein, who stimulated a broad discussion of the nature of reality in a secular arena at a time when traditional structures of authority were weakening. The course considers the biography of each scientist and the impact of his ideas in different countries and on scientific disciplines, popular culture, religion, art, and literature.
