Designed for students with little or no previous ancient Greek who are seriously interested in making quick progress in the language, this course covers all basic grammar and offers considerable practice in reading prose. Prospective students should learn the alphabet before the first meeting. They may contact the instructor through the Summer School Dean's Office to obtain a copy in advance.

This course is an introduction to the most popular genre of Greek prose fiction and its cultural background in the first and second centuries of the imperial era. Selections from Longus' Daphnis and Chloe, Chariton and Achilles Tatius, as well as fragments of new novels on papyrus are studied. Close readings are combined with a review of Attic morphology and syntax. Prerequisite: A minimum of one year of college-level Greek or the equivalent.
