This eight-week intensive course provides a thorough introduction to German language and culture, encompassing all four skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Class time is focused on developing oral proficiency; by the end of the course, students should be able to engage in everyday conversations with native speakers. Language instruction is supplemented by a discussion section on cultural, social, and political developments in Germany through literature, film, and newspaper articles.

This introduction to German expository prose is designed primarily for students who wish to acquire a reading knowledge of the language for research purposes. Texts from a variety of fields are used. No previous knowledge of German is assumed.
