The mythical world of gods and heroes as seen through the eyes of Greek and Roman poets. Emphasis on continuity and change in the formation of the poetic voice; on genre, narrative techniques, and story patterns; gender roles and fictional identities; the role of myth and religion; and the interplay of past and present. Texts (in translation) include selections from Homer's Odyssey and the Homeric Hymns; Hesiod's Theogony; Pindar and the Greek tragedians; the Argonautica of Apollonius of Rhodes; Virgil's Aeneid, Ovid's Metamorphoses, and Seneca's tragedies.
