Math Program
Harvard Summer School offers an intriguing array of mathematics courses for students of all interests and abilities. Beginning with MATH S-Ar, a course in precalculus, the math program's courses include traditional offerings, such as single-variable and multivariable calculus, as well as more specialized classes. Students looking for courses not available at their high school may choose one of the fast-paced courses in first- or second-semester calculus (MATH S-1a or MATH S-1b), or a more advanced course, such as MATH S-21a Multivariable Calculus or MATH S-21b Linear Algebra. The intensive 8-unit course, MATH S-1ab Calculus I and II, covers two semesters of single-variable calculus through sequences and series, and has long been a favorite of talented high school juniors and seniors.
Beyond these options, exciting opportunities abound with related courses such as PHIL S-140 Introduction to Logic, CSCI S-1 Elements of Computer Science Using Java, and MATH S-104 Discrete Mathematics with Computer Science Applications. In MATH S-21u Summer Seminar--Calculating Pi, students explore the mathematical, computational, and historical challenges associated with calculating more and more digits of this important number.
Each summer, secondary school students with a particular interest in mathematics travel to Cambridge from all over the world to study at Harvard. Award-winning faculty teach small groups of students, often 15 or fewer. The mathematics placement test, available online, assists students in selecting math courses that are right for them. At the Math Question Center, students gather in the evenings to study together and to work with teaching fellows and professors. They look forward to attending special lectures, math tables, and other events. Summer is the perfect time to come to Harvard and join the community of students and scholars who enjoy the intellectual challenges of the study of mathematics.
